Single out metal and medical or surgical-grade stainless steel cages. Avoid plastic and wooden cages, because your finch can damage these and may end up escaping.

    • 2

Look for a cage that is at least 30 inches long. Finches exercise by flying. If the cage is too small, they can't fly and get the exercise they need to stay healthy. Buy a larger cage if you intend to purchase more finches in future. Calculate a floor space of 3 square feet for each pair of birds.

    • 3

Don't worry about the height of the cage, because finches don't climb the cage and they don't fly upward. A cage height ranging from 15 to 30 inches is sufficient.

    • 4

Check the distance between the wires of the cage. If the openings are too wide, your finch's head may get stuck or the bird may escape. Aim for a wire spacing no larger than 1/2 inch.

    • 5

Examine the closure on the cage and look for one that your finch won't be able to open. Choose a cage with a sliding door, a swing-out door or a hinged door.

    • 6

Find a cage that has one or more perches in it, so your finch can sit on them and enjoy the view. Avoid perches made from cedar or redwood, because these are toxic to your finch. Choose perches made from concrete or non-toxic hardwood branches, such as citrus and poplar.

Look for a cage that has at least one swing in it to keep your finch entertained.
