Things You'll Need
- Small cardboard box
- Scissors or box cutter
- Towel
- Masking tape
- Blanket (optional)
Instructions
Cut holes in a small cardboard box. Smaller boxes are better for moving budgies. The size gives the bird less area to move around or get hurt. Cut the holes large enough so the bird has adequate oxygen. Place several holes on the sides of the box toward the top. Cut holes in the lid of the box, as well. Ideally, the holes should each be an inch in size.
Place a towel at the bottom of the box. The towel gives the budgie proper footing if it slides a little during the journey home. A hand towel or an old towel folded up and placed in the box will suffice.
Carefully place the budgie in the box. Pick up the budgie and gently place it at the bottom of the box. Don't squeeze the bird or make any sudden moves. Work slowly and gently while transferring the budgie from a cage to a travel box.
Put the lid on the box. Tape the lid to the box. Place a piece of masking tape on either side of the box where the lid closes. This prevents the lid from coming off the box during bumpy rides.
Wrap the box in a small blanket if the weather is cooler. Wrap the box with just the lid exposed. Budgies get cold easily. The blanket protects the bird from chilly drafts.
Sit with the box in your lap. Hold the box during the duration of the ride home. You want to give your bird the smoothest ride possible. When you hold the box, it also gives you the opportunity to peer inside the box through the air holes and ensure that the bird is doing all right.
