How to Make Parakeets Stand on Your Finger

The parakeet originates from Australia. It is also known as a budgie, which means ̶0;good bird̶1; and ̶0;good food.̶1; Parakeets are members of the parrot family. People often purchase parakeets to experience the fun of training them to talk or to stand on their finger or shoulder. Because they are so small, humans easily frighten them. The owner of a new parakeet must be patient and earn its trust before attempting to train it.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the parakeet seven to 10 days to adjust to its new surroundings before coaxing it to stand on your finger.

    • 2

Clip its wings to hinder its ability to fly around the house during the training phase. The wings will eventually grow back.

    • 3

Speak to the parakeet repeatedly in a low, soothing voice, or sing to it.

    • 4

Spend time sitting in the room with the cage so the parakeet becomes used to your presence. Gradually move the chair closer to the cage each day. Sit quietly without making eye contact.

    • 5

Don̵7;t yell at the parakeet or pick it up when it is scared. This is counterproductive to your goal of earning its trust.

    • 6

Practice putting your hand in the cage once the parakeet no longer flaps around in fear when you approach.

    • 7

Use your index finger to stroke its chest. Remove your hand from the cage and try again later if it gets too excited.

    • 8

Bring treats each time you approach the cage and let your hand linger briefly. Gradually try to convince it to eat from your hand.

    • 9

Place your finger beneath the parakeet̵7;s breast and push up to encourage it to stand on your finger.

    • 10

Repeat the process until it naturally steps onto your finger, but limit training to 10-to-15-minute sessions.
