How to Make a Duck Nest Out of a Cardboard Box

As adults, ducks require minimal bedding ̵1; an outdoor shelter such as a dog house is usually sufficient ̵1; but as ducklings, you'll need to pay more attention to their sleeping space. A nest can be easily constructed using a large cardboard box and some soft bedding. These duck nests should be kept indoors or in a sheltered, confined space, such as a shed or a garage, until the ducklings have grown their own feathers.

      Get a cardboard box that is wide and deep. Your duck will also be using the box as its litter so there needs to be enough room to keep the sleeping space and the litter separate.

      Pack a combination of pine shavings and cedar chips into the box. Fill it up about halfway with bedding. To make a softer bed, put in white stuffing ̵1; available at most craft stores ̵1; before laying the cedar chips and pine shavings down.

      Attach a heat lamp to one corner of the box and keep it on whenever the duck is sleeping. Small ducklings need warmth until they grow their own down ̵1; usually when they are a month old. Keep the lamp in one corner so the duck can move away from the heat.
