How do large gulls eat puffins or puffin eggs?

Gulls are not known for preying on adult puffins, a seabird of the auk family. Although gulls are opportunistic predators, Puffins mainly feed on sand eels and other small fish, making up the bulk of their diet. Therefore, it is not common behavior for gulls to try and hunt healthy adult Puffins.

However, gulls are known to prey upon eggs and vulnerable chicks of puffins, as well as other seabirds. Puffin burrows and nesting areas are vulnerable to predators such as gulls, which can attack and feed on eggs and hatchlings. To protect their nests and young, puffins often nest in burrows or rocky crevices that are difficult for predators to reach, and defend their colonies aggressively against intruders.
