What sound or sounds does the cottontail make?

Cottontails are generally quiet animals, but they do make a few distinct sounds:

* Grunting: A low, guttural sound often used during mating season.

* Sniffing: A high-pitched sound used to communicate with other rabbits.

* Thumping: They can thump their hind feet on the ground as a warning signal, especially when startled.

* Squeaking: Young cottontails make squeaking sounds to call for their mothers.

While they may also make other noises, these are the most common.
