Why Is My Parakeet Afraid of Me?

It is not that uncommon for a parakeet to be afraid of its master. There are a few typical reasons why these birds will be afraid of you. The caring master can follow a few simple rules and can stop their bird from fearing him, and make it start loving its master.
  1. Reasons the Bird is Afraid

    • Birds are often afraid of new environments, and they fear that you are not trustworthy. Over time, this will change if you train them and give them some attention. Birds are also often afraid of hands. Sometimes quick movements can also make a bird afraid, so make sure that when you are changing food or water or cleaning the bird, you are moving slowly.

    Prevent Fear of Hands

    • The first thing you need to do is allow them to see you as a friend. Try putting birdseed in your hand for them to eat. Then present the seed to them and wait for them to eat it. This will probably take the birds a long time, but you have to be patient. You also need to keep your hand perfectly still. Eventually, after 10 minutes or so, the bird will eat out of your hand. However, it usually takes several attempts, so do not relent. Talk to the bird while you do this.

Prevent the Fear of the Environment

    • Make sure that you put the bird in a thoughtful place --- by the window, or near a sun lamp or a happy place. Try to make the place comfortable, as birds will settle in if they know they are safe. Give it time and try your best to make the parakeet comfortable.

    Prevent the Fear of You

    • This is the easiest, although it will take some perseverance: You need to sing and talk to your bird. However, the most important thing to do is to move slowly around your parakeet at all times. The bird needs to feel like you are not coming to get it. Eventually, it will learn to trust you.
