How to Make a Parrot Tower

All parrots need a quality tower to perch upon. While you can buy artificial "dowel" towers from a pet and home hardware stores, it is much better to build your own parrot tower out of natural wood. Ideally, you want to build a tower with a variety of different branches of different shapes and sizes for your parrot -- smaller perches allow for a better grip and enable the bird to properly stretch and exercise its wings, while larger perches will help keep its nails well-trimmed.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-foot-high trunk of manzanita or other hard wood
  • "Branches" for the tower
  • Wood glue
  • Rope or steel wire
  • Base litter box
  • Wood chips

Instructions

Acquire the wood needed for your tower. You can buy various branches made of manzanita or other hard woods at various pet supply stores. Alternatively you can look in your backyard or neighborhood for good hard branches. If you are doing this, make sure you scrub the branches with hot water, or even "roast" the branches in your oven for about an hour before construction -- this gets rid of microscopic insects. Select a large branch, at least 4-foot high and with multiple forks, to be the main trunk of the tower. Select a few smaller pieces to be the branches of the tower.

Get yourself a plastic or metal box to act as a litter box. You can buy these boxes with wheels from a pet store. Now affix your trunk onto the base of the box. Some store-bought boxes will have a wire mesh netting that helps support the trunk. Otherwise, you'll have to use wood glue. Line the box with wood chips.

Align the secondary branches flat across the forks of the main trunk. Attach them onto the main trunk with wood glue and rope or steel wires. You should have branches of various sizes to accommodate the various needs of your parrot.
