How to Bring a Parakeet Out of Its Cage

Parakeets, also called budgies, are small parrots that live in large flocks in the wild. They are highly social and are capable of bonding strongly with their owners. However, because these animals are susceptible to predation in the wild, they are skittish and fearful in new situations. By slowly acclimating your parakeet to being out of its cage, you will encourage it to bond and feel comfortable with you.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the area where you will be playing with your parakeet. All doors and windows should be closed. Turn off any fans or other electrical devices that could injure your parakeet, and clear the room of dogs and cats.

    • 2

Approach your parakeet's cage calmly, avoiding sudden movements that could frighten your bird. Speak softly to your parakeet and give it a treat through the bars of the cage. Open the cage door and give your bird another treat.

    • 3

Place your hand in the cage next to your parakeet, with your index and middle finger extended to form a perch. Wait for your parakeet to perch on your fingers. If it doesn't, gently brush upward from the tops of your bird's feet to its abdomen. This normally encourages parakeets to perch. If your bird still does not perch, place a treat on the part of your hand that is not extended and continue to wait.

Lift your hand up and out of the cage when your parakeet perches on your fingers. Avoid shaking your hand or making sudden movements until your parakeet is safely out of the cage. When you've completely removed your hand from the cage, give your parakeet another treat. Birds learn by association, and when you give your parakeet treats, you teach it to associate interaction with you with receiving a reward.
