How to Eliminate Bird Nests

In most cases, birds are appreciated for their beauty, song and flying capabilities, along with their contributions to our ecological system. There are times, however, when birds can be a nuisance. If a bird's nest is located in a tree near your bedroom window, you may be subjected to chirping all day long, which could interfere with your sleep. Birds can also pose serious health threats. Histoplasmosis is a disease that can cause flu-like symptoms, or in rare cases, death for individuals with compromised immune systems. Histoplasmosis is acquired by inhaling spores from a fungus that grows around bird droppings. Removing a bird's nests is one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Check with the Migratory Bird Treaty and Endangered Species Act prior to removing a bird's nest in the U.S. This act prohibits the trapping, possession or killing of most birds, their eggs and nests, without a permit.

    • 2

Put on gloves, masks and other protective gear to make sure your body is fully covered.

    • 3

Climb to the location of the bird's nest, using a ladder if necessary, and physically remove and dispose of the nests. Only do this if the birds and eggs are out of the nest.

    • 4

Put a cat or owl statue in a place commonly occupied by the birds. This statue may intimidate the birds and prevent them from building a new nest on your property.

    • 5

Install bird spikes on your property to prevent birds from landing on your roof or ledges.

    • 6

Contact a nuisance wildlife company in your city and hire them to remove the birds and nests.
