How to Build a Love Bird Aviary

Lovebirds are a miniature version of parrots with equal intelligence capabilities. Lively and playful, lovebirds enjoy an active life. These birds thrive when living in pairs, and in a housing environment that gives them freedom of movement, such as an aviary. From fulfilling basic housing needs, the aviary helps maintain the lovebird's physical and emotional well-being. Use the space at your disposal to create a comfortable aviary for your lovebirds.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a quiet, partially shaded area to build the aviary. The aviary should ideally be positioned facing the south or east, to benefit from the morning sun, and provide protection from cold winds in the winter.

    • 2

Construct the aviary on a cement or brick floor, as such floors are easy to clean and discourage small animals from burrowing. The ideal aviary should be 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide on each side.

    • 3

Create three frames for the aviary walls with untreated wood. Use a jigsaw to cut the wood into 6- by 3-feet frames, and prepare each frame by nailing 3-inch screws to the four corners. The frames will hold and support the galvanized wire walls and the roof. Coat the frames with non-toxic paint and allow to dry.

    • 4

Wrap the frames with 10-gauge galvanized wire to create the walls. Fix the wire to the inner surface and extend it to the adjoining side, from the top to the bottom of the frame, leaving one open-air side with wire mesh only. Use a staple gun to secure the wires. This will keep the wire edges out of the lovebirds reach and prevent them from pecking and removing the staples.

    • 5

Connect the three walls together by fixing 3-inch screws at the top and bottom of the frames. Hold the walls vertically to the edge of the concrete floor. Diagonally hammer nails from the base of the frame to the cement or brick base, to secure them to the ground. Convert one frame into a door by attaching two hinges at the top and bottom, using 3-inch screws and a screwdriver. Attach the magnet lock on the opposite side.

    • 6

Fix Plexiglas or corrugated plastic panels atop the frames to prepare the roof. Connect the roof to the frame by nailing 3-inch screws. Fix hardwood panels to half the section of two walls. This will shelter and protect the birds during extreme weather conditions.

Place edible, nontoxic potted plants, climbing vines and foliage in the aviary to create a natural environment. Strategically affix perches, swings and toys to keep the lovebirds occupied at work and play.
