How to Prevent Mold in Bird Feeders

Bird feeders are devices that provide a food source for wild birds. They are often used by birdwatchers to attract a variety of beautiful birds to their yards. They come in many different styles depending on what type of bird species you want to attract. Unfortunately, many types of bacteria and mold can thrive in bird feeders, especially if the seed gets wet. The key to preventing mildew from forming in bird feeders is to keep them clean and sanitized.

Clean the bird feeder when it's empty. Scrub every part of the bird feeder with a bottle brush, soap and water. Rinse and dry completely before adding seed.

    • 2

Remove clumps of wet bird food daily. Discard food that smells foul or musty to prevent mold from forming.

    • 3

Check every day for mold growth. Inspect every part of the bird feeder for mold. If you find any, treat it immediately with soap and water.

    • 4

Sanitize your bird feeders once a month to help prevent mold from forming. Mix ¼ cup chlorine bleach and 1 gallon water and soak the entire bird feeder in a large bucket. If you cannot find a bucket large enough, use the bottle brush to thoroughly sanitize the bird feeder.

Prevent mold from forming with apple cider vinegar. Vinegar is a natural antifungal. Spray an equal mixture of water and vinegar in the bird feeder, let it sit for a while and then wipe away. This kills any remaining mold and prevents new mold from forming.
