How to Build a Parrot Playstand

Parrot playstands provide a place for your parrot to climb, play and stretch its wings when outside of its cage. However, purchasing an additional playstand to sit next to your parrot's cage may not be an option if you have limited space. A space-saving option is to construct, in less than an hour, a parrot playstand on the top of your bird's primary cage with just a few materials you might already have.

Things You'll Need

  • Bird perch
  • Birdcage
  • 2 sheets newspaper
  • 6 inches natural cotton rope
  • Ventilated pet carrier

Instructions

  1. Cage Selection

    • 1

Safely remove your bird from its own cage (if you are using your bird's primary cage) and place it in a safe environment so you will be able to work without your bird being distressed. A properly ventilated pet carrier or travel cage will work fine.

    • 2

Select a perch your parrot has already gotten bored with that safely accommodates the weight of your bird. Using a perch your bird is familiar with reduces the stress that new toys can cause.

    • 3
Example of a 7-shaped perch if held vertically

Check the perch's shape. It needs to have a 7, Y , or T shape when you hold it vertically (upright) so that your bird will have a place to perch.

    • 4

Check the perch's grip, washer or clamp and be sure it functions properly so that it will not unhinge when your bird climbs or shifts its weight.

    • 5

Open the cage door so that you will have access to the cage top from both inside and outside of the cage.

    Perch Placement

    • 6

Locate the center of the cage top, which is generally close to the carrier handle on your bird's cage top. Attach the perch in the center of the cage so that it stands vertically or upright. It should point toward the ceiling when in place.

    • 7

Check the perch for stability. It should not move, unscrew or be capable of being unhinged by your parrot's weight or chewing activity.

    • 8

Place the newspaper around the base of the perch so that it drapes around the base of the perch. This will prevent bird droppings from falling on your bird's toys hanging inside the cage.

    • 9

Select either the crook or arm of the perch and tie the cotton rope around it (just as you would when starting to tie your tennis shoe lace, but without making the bow). The cotton rope will serve as a chew toy and a place to hold green beans, carrots or other treats for playtime.

    • 10

Close your bird's cage door and double-check the perch's fixtures for safety. Double-check that the cage is stable and will hold your bird's weight. If all is well, you and your bird are ready to enjoy the new playstand together.
