Homemade Nest Boxes

Making nest boxes is an important part of keeping chickens. A nest box provides a safe place for chickens to sit and lay eggs and also makes it simpler for individuals to collect eggs. A nest box is different from a perch or a roost in that it is only used for laying eggs. Chickens do not always sleep in their nest boxes, which should be left open inside a coop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sides and bottoms of the boxes. Each box should be 12 inches tall and 18 inches along each side. Use a pencil to mark your measurements on 1/2-inch plywood.

    • 2

Work in a garage, barn or outside to prevent making a mess with sawdust. Use a saw to cut out the sides and bottom. Sand the edges if necessary.

    • 3

Attach the sides of the boxes together with 1-inch nails. Place the edges flush against one another to form a tight fit before connecting them.

    • 4

Put the bottom on the box, which should be 18 inches on all sides, with 1-inch nails. Make sure the bottom is flush with the edges of all sides before attaching it.

    • 5

Fill the box about halfway with straw or bedding. This will make the nest more comfortable and protect the eggs. Place the box in the chicken coop or a protected location.
