How to Introduce a Male Cockatiel to a Female

If you own a male or female cockatiel, you may decide to introduce your current bird to a new bird of the opposite sex. Cockatiels are not particularly territorial, according to the National Cockatiel Society; but you should take some precautions to protect the health of your pet bird before housing it with a new companion.

Things You'll Need

  • Separate quarantine area
  • Separate cages and supplies
  • Large cage to accommodate two birds (approximately 18 inches by 24 inches)

Instructions

    • 1

Quarantine the new cockatiel for a minimum of 4 weeks, and up to 12 weeks, depending on circumstances. Place it in a separate cage with separate supplies, preferably in a different room than where your resident bird is located.

    • 2

Care for your resident bird first, before caring for your new bird. This will reduce the possibility of transferring illness or disease to your resident bird. Wash your hands after handling either bird and use separate cleaning tools when cleaning each bird's area to prevent the possibility of cross-contamination.

    • 3

After the quarantine period has elapsed, move the second bird's cage close to the resident bird's cage, and allow them to see each other and communicate from their respective cages for 2 to 3 days.

    • 4

Set up a new, larger cage if your resident bird's cage is not large enough to accommodate two birds. With two water and feeding dishes, perches and various toys, a cage measuring 18 inches by 24 inches can provide sufficient space for two birds.

    • 5

Introduce both birds into the new cage at the same time, and monitor them to ensure that one bird is not trying to keep the other one from obtaining food or water.
