Instructions
Locate a local breeder and take a trip to their facilities to check out the birds you are interested in. Find out about about the bird's lineage, and inquire about the hardiness of the stock.
Visually assess the birds. Ask yourself these questions: are they housed in cramped quarters; do their feathers look glossy and full; do the birds appear active and healthy. You do not want to invest in sick birds that can potentially bring disease and sickness to your existing flock.
Select your bird(s). Ensure that they come with a written health guarantee for a short period of time. If you are planning on breeding the birds later on, you will want to select stock with the coloration and variety you want to achieve in your future breeding endeavors.
Allow the new birds to get acclimated in their surroundings before introducing them to your current flock. Quarantine the new additions in a separate coop for a period of 30 days is ideal. If after a 30 day period they still appear healthy and are not showing signs of illness, you can house the new birds with your current flock.
