How to Tell the Difference Between Male & Female Chicks

There are two ways to tell the difference between a young male or female chick. One is called feather sexing. The other is called Vent sexing. Feather sexing is done by noticing characteristics of the chick̵7;s feathers at hatch time, but it does not work with all chicks. Vent sexing is done by finding sexual organs. The process takes some experience, but it can be learned easily.

Gently squeeze the chick. This will release some of the chicks feces and allow it̵7;s cloaca, or anal vent, to appear.

Look underneath the chick for a small bump. The sexual organs of the chick are located inside the body. The male will have a noticeable bump right after relieving itself. Females may also have a bump, but it will be even smaller than the male̵7;s.

Look at the chick̵7;s feathers. Feather sexing is easy, but it is only available in some breeds. It is a genetic trait. In these breeds, female chicks will have longer wing pinfeathers than the male.

Put the chick aside. Make sure you separate the chick from any that have not been sexed. You can also mark the chick with an ankle band. It will be very difficult to tell without repeating the process.
