How to Stop Screaming Cockatoos

Owning a cockatoo is pleasurable for many bird lovers. The birds are social and can provide companionship. Cockatoos are loud, however, and will become louder if the behavior is allowed to continue. Owning a cockatoo demands time and devotion. If a cockatoo screams constantly, the owners will become desperate for peace and quiet in their home. Rather than removing the bird, attempt to remove the problem by changing the bird's behavior.

Examine and evaluate the cockatoo's environment. Cockatoos can be like children. If they are lacking sleep or are uncomfortable, they will scream. Make sure your cockatoo has adequate rest and that its cage is clean. Provide proper bedding. Be sure the bird gets enough communication with you.

Review the bird's diet. If cockatoos receive an inadequate diet, they will become agitated and begin to scream from frustration. Review the ingredients in the screaming cockatoo's food and determine if it contains enough nutrients.

Retrain the cockatoo. If diet and environment are OK, it is time to start treating the cockatoo like a spoiled child. When the bird screams, ignore it. When the bird is calm, talk to it and hold it. Reward good behavior, not bad.
