How did the yardbirds get their name?
The Yardbirds were initially called "the Blueswailing Metropolitans" and then known simply as "The Metropolitans". Paul Samwell-Smith came up with the name "The Yardbirds" in reference to the slang term "long yardbird" for a tall, thin person, which was itself derived from the bird name "yardfowl" or "yard bird", which is applied especially to domestic chickens and turkeys kept in a back yard. The slang reference was inspired by their manager at the time, Giorgio Gomelsky, who was said to have been six foot six.
