What do duck sounds mean?

Quacks

- Single Quack: A single quack from a duck is the most basic sound a duck can make and generally has three meanings.

* For female ducks, it can be used as an alarm call to warn her ducklings of danger.

* For male ducks, it can be used to acknowledge a greeting from another duck or as a general greeting signal.

* As a signal from ducklings, it can be a basic call for their parents to get their attention.

- Repeated Quacks (Rapid): A series of rapid quacks from a duck signifies danger or excitement.

- Low Quack: A single, long, drawn-out quack from a duck signifies contentment.

- Soft, Rhythmic Quack: Ducks also tend to quack in a rhythmic manner during preening and bathing, expressing a calming and contented mood.

Cackles/Laughing Sounds

- A cackling or laughing sound from a female duck signifies she is mating or ready to mate.

Hisses

- A hissing sound from a duck signifies agitation or annoyance, much like a low-pitched version of a cat’s hiss. Ducks might also emit hisses when faced with a serious threat, such as a predator.

Squeals

- Squealing sounds are typically made by ducklings when they are hurt, scared, or very hungry.
