Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of birds you would like to release and then select a square wooden holding cage that will comfortably accommodate this number. Keep in mind that doves require flight daily, and should not be kept caged for extended periods of time. When selecting a cage, try to find a model that will supply at least six cubic feet per bird.

    • 2

Remove one side from the cage using a hacksaw. Cut the side from the cage along the seam where it was attached and set it aside.

    • 3

Reinforce the remaining five-sided box cage using some screws to ensure it will hold its shape without the removed side. Insert at least one screw through each side into another to increase the strength of the box.

    • 4

Along one edge of the open side of the cage, attach a hinge that will allow the removed side to be opened and closed against the cage. Screw the hinge onto one edge using a number of screws. Cut the hinge, if necessary to fit your cage using the hacksaw.

    • 5

Screw down one metal washer with one screw onto each edge of the two corners opposite the installed hinge.

    • 6

Mount the removed panel of the cage to the hinge, so that it will close the cage when folded down. Insert a number of screws through the hinge and into the removed panel to secure it to the cage.

    • 7

Mark the location of the washers where they make contact with the hinged lid to the cage. Mount two small yet strong magnets to the corresponding location of the washers using some cyanoacrylate glue. When the lid is closed the magnets will make contact with the washers, holding the lid closed.

Tie a length of thin string or wire to the side of the cage's lid with the magnets installed. Place the desired number of doves into the cage and close the lid; the magnets will keep the lid closed until the desired release moment. When you wish to release the birds, pull on the string from a distance to pull the lid open to release the birds.
