Instructions
Select your materials carefully. Use a combination of natural and artificial materials. Select a thick cotton thread for all hanging items, thicker if your bird is heavy. You can use household items in your bird's playground. For instance, you can use natural sticks or you can build your bird things to play with out of LEGOs toys.
Clean all items for your bird's playground. Wash all artificial items with clean water. Use a sharp knife to remove excess bark from sticks before incorporating them in your playground, to reduce the amount of mess created by the bird playing with its playground.
Build hanging items for the bird to bite at, shake and tug on by affixing items your bird can bite to the top of your birdcage. Use thick string, ensuring your toy will remain in place. Use items too large for your bird to swallow, such as long sticks or LEGO pieces larger than the bird's throat. Tie each piece together, forming a line of items. Tie one end to the top of your birdcage letting it hang freely in the cage.
Place the cleaned sticks in the birdcage. Slide the thin ends of the sticks between the bars and tie the thicker ends to the top of your birdcage with string. Make sure each stick is stable in the cage, using extra string to hold it in place if it moves too easily. Alternately, use standard PVC pipe in the birdcage, arranged and hung in the same way as sticks. Use the PVC pipe for a longlasting bird playground, as the pipe will survive regular wear and tear for much longer than sticks.
Measure the circumference of your pipe or sticks. Use this number as the width and cut a few rectangular pieces from a towel. Wrap these pieces around the sticks or pipes in the birdcage and tie them in place with string. Use this technique if your bird is a biter or a chewer, giving it something safe to chew.
How to Make a Bird Playground
A bird playground turns your bird's cage into a fun place to spend the day and gives you hours of enjoyment watching your bird. A bird playground is any collection of toys, chewable items, perches or safe-to-chew areas for your bird to enjoy. You can purchase expensive, professional bird playgrounds or build one of your own with a few objects you normally find in your home. You can add a natural element to your bird playground by adding a few items for your bird to enjoy.
