How to Make a Nesting Box That You Can See the Chicks In

Nesting boxes are an essential tool for raising chickens. Hens won't sit on a nest if they don't feel safe and comfortable, and a nest box closes the hen off from the rest of the flock and protects her as she incubates her eggs. Traditional nesting boxes are made with solid panels that don't allow you to see inside, but a clean plastic tote can be modified to make a sturdy, see-through nesting box.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from a clear plastic tote, and cut a 6-inch tall square from one narrow side of the tote. Start at the upper lip of the box and cut down toward the bottom, making the square wide enough to allow your hen to comfortably enter the box.

Wash the nesting box and lid wiith hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Scrub the box with a sponge to remove any debris and bits of plastic. Rinse with clean water and allow it to air dry.

    • 3

Add a few handfuls of clean, fresh straw to the bottom of the tote. The hen will scratch and pick at the bedding to arrange a comfortable rest, so add at least 2 inches of straw to protect and insulate the eggs.

Place the lid on the tote, and snap it in place. Set the finished nesting box inside the chicken coop, and peek through the plastic lid to monitor your hen and her new chicks.
