What difference between a drake and duck?

A drake is a male duck, while a female duck is called a hen or a female duck. The term "duck" can be used to refer to either a male or a female. Some key differences between drakes and hens include:

1. Appearance: Drakes are typically larger than hens. While this is not always the case, it is a general trend. Drakes also have brighter and more vibrant plumage. This helps them attract females.

2. Behavior: Drakes are more aggressive than hens. During mating season, drakes will often fight other males for the right to mate with hens. They may also harass hens and force them to mate.

3. Vocalization: Drakes have a louder and more distinctive call than hens. This helps them attract females and defend their territory.

4. Molting: Drakes tend to molt more than hens. Molting is the process of shedding and regrowing feathers. Drakes molt in the fall and winter, while hens molt in the spring and summer.

5. Reproduction: Drakes play no role in raising ducklings. They leave that to the hens. They will often leave the area where hens are nesting and return later when ducklings have hatched and are ready to leave the nest.

6. Lifespan: Drakes have a shorter lifespan than hens. On average, drakes live for about two to three years, while hens can live for up to five years.
