Filoplumes are also known as feathers?
Filoplumes are not known as feathers. They are one of the three types of feather found on birds, the other two being contour feathers and down feathers. Filoplumes are small, hair-like feathers that are located at the base of contour feathers. They are very thin and have a long shaft with a few barbs at the end. Filoplumes are thought to be used for sensory purposes, such as touch and temperature.
