Why is the NM state bird a symbol?

The state bird of New Mexico, the roadrunner, serves more as a mascot as opposed to a symbolic image of the state, like how New Mexico’s state flower does in being emblematic of the state’s history, environment, culture, etc. In addition to the New Mexico State flower (Yucca flower), other examples of symbolism relating to New Mexico are seen through New Mexico’s state colors(red and yellow), state reptile (Bullsnake), state amphibian (Northern Leopard Frog), state mammal (Black Bear), as well as many others found through an internet search using these key terms of interest!
