Turkeys are large birds known for their impressive size and weight. Adult male turkeys, called toms, can grow up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) tall and weigh over 25 pounds (11 kilograms). Female turkeys, known as hens, are slightly smaller, typically reaching heights of around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and weighing between 10 to 18 pounds (4.5 to 8 kilograms).
2. Head and Feathers
Turkeys have distinct physical features that contribute to their unique appearance. Their heads are adorned with featherless skin, ranging in color from red to blue or white, and they feature a fleshy flap of skin called a wattle. Additionally, male turkeys have a large fleshy growth on their beaks called a snood. While both males and females possess impressive tail feathers, the male turkeys' tail feathers are particularly large and colorful, creating a striking display.
3. Vocalizations
Turkeys are known for their distinctive vocalizations. Male turkeys are famous for their characteristic "gobble" sound, which is produced during mating season to attract females and defend their territory. In addition to the gobble, turkeys also make various other sounds, including clucks, whistles, and cackles, to communicate with each other in different situations.
