How to Move a Broody Hen to a Nest

A hen likes to brood in a dark and enclosed place. Like other animals, the brooding hen will need a nesting area that allows her to feel safe and comfortable. When a suitable nesting area is provided, the hen should remain on the nest and brood her clutch.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange a nest in a dark and quiet section of the barn or chicken coop. Be certain the area is secured from predators and that the hen will not be disturbed. Keep feed and water nearby intended for the sole use of the broody hen. Check that she is not harassed or pushed from her nest by other hens or roosters. Move her and the nest if this occurs.

    • 2

Place clean straw or shavings in the nesting bag or nesting box. Place the hatching eggs or fake eggs in the nest. Pick up the broody hen and place her on the eggs. If she is broody she will remain there and begin to set the eggs.

    • 3

Observe the hen to ensure she leaves the nest at least once a day to eat and relieve herself. Lift her off the nest for these purposes twice a day if she does not leave on her own. Check that she is not getting too thin by picking her up daily. She should not lose too much weight or become weak.
