How to Train a Cockatiel to Whistle

You can train your pet cockatiel to whistle right at home. How long it takes to train your bird will vary greatly. Males are generally more able to whistle, sing and talk than female cockatiels, but not all cockatiels have these capabilities at all. Hormones affect the male cockatiels in their prime, causing them to become vocal during their courting rituals.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen for your cockatiel to whistle on his own. When he does, say something like "Whistle, whistle." Repeat this phrase over and over every time he whistles but for no longer than 10 minutes at a time.

    • 2

Say "Whistle, whistle" after a few days of training to see if you can cue your cockatiel to whistle. If this works, then training is complete. If not, go on to the next step.

    • 3

Remove distractions from the cage such as food and toys and repeat Steps 1 and 2. If this doesn't work, go on to Step 4.

    • 4

Cover the bird cage with a cloth and repeat Steps 1 and 2. If this doesn't work, go on to Step 5.

    • 5

Take the cockatiel out of the cage and let him perch on your finger. If you trust your bird not to peck at you, position him face to face with you. Let him or her watch your mouth as you make a whistling sound. If or when your cockatiel repeats the sound, praise him.
