Things You'll Need
- Bird treats
Instructions
Approach the cage calmly, whistling or talking to your parakeet in a low voice to announce your presence.
Open the cage door and try to entice your parakeet to come to you by holding bird treats into the cage. Avoid chasing him around the cage, as this pursuit will only make him fear you more.
Press your finger gently against your parakeet's lower stomach when she approaches you to encourage her to perch on you. As you do this, say a command (such as "Step up").
Feed your parakeet more treats once you have removed him from his cage. Stroke his back and neck, and continue to calmly talk to him. Keep your movements slow to avoid startling him.
Return your parakeet to her cage after 20 minutes of handling for food and water, and come back later to repeat the process. Do this at least three times a day to quickly have a sweet, hand-tamed baby parakeet.
