Food Sources
-
Get rid of any pigeon food sources that are found in your yard or area. Pigeons are attracted to food sources and will often flock in places that have food for them. Typically, pigeons eat seeds and plant life, but in many areas pigeons eat garbage, human food leftovers and other refuge laying around. Clear up your yard, deck and land and get rid of anything that doesn't belong there. Remove or cover all garbage. Do not leave cat or dog food outdoors in a place where pigeons can find it. Sweep up your outside areas; use soap and water and disinfectant to clean up any bird or pigeon droppings. A clean area is the first step to homemade pigeon control.
Predators or Scares
-
Scare pigeons away from roosting in your outdoor areas by employing the use of predators or scares. Predators like cats and dogs can be used in the suburbs or country to scare away pigeons because they will chase them. In a city, let your cat onto the balcony for a few hours each day, providing this is safe.
Scare pigeons away with homemade pigeon scares. Lollipop-sized pinwheels, large hanging strips of fabric or objects hanging from your balcony that are constantly rotating or moving will scare the birds. If you use this method, keep changing the arrangement and types of scares so that the birds do not get used to them.
Spikes or Stakes
-
Discourage roosting to prevent pigeons from hanging around your area. Install pigeon stakes on flat surfaces like balcony roofs, gutters or overhangs. Make stakes of any material, such as the tops of wire fences, grilling skewers, metal pieces or wooden stakes. Place them in close proximity and leave no room for roosting. Without room to roost, pigeons will move on to somewhere else.
