Spend time with your parrot and get them used to being petted and held. Start by doing this for short periods of time and gradually increase the length of time as they get more comfortable with it. Be gentle and praise them when they cooperate.
2. Once your parrot is comfortable being handled, start introducing them to your shoulder. Place them on your shoulder for short periods at a time and gradually increase the length of time as they get more comfortable. Be sure to support them with your hand so they don’t feel unsteady.
3. When your parrot is comfortable sitting on your shoulder, you can start to teach them to stay put. Do this by saying “stay” or “sit” when they are on your shoulder and then gently pushing them down with your hand if they start to move. Be consistent with this and eventually, they will learn to stay on your shoulder without you having to hold them.
4. Practice, practice, practice! The more time you spend with your parrot, the better they will become at staying on your shoulder and responding to your commands.
5. Be patient and reward good behavior. Use treats, praise or playtime as incentives. Make training sessions fun and positive.
Here are some additional tips for teaching your parrot to stay on your shoulder:
- Start training when your parrot is young.
- Make sure your parrot has plenty of opportunities to fly.
- Never punish your parrot for not staying on your shoulder.
- Be consistent with your training and don’t give up. Eventually, your parrot will learn to stay on your shoulder without you having to hold them.
