How to Hand Train a Parakeet

Parakeets are intelligent, social birds, and are quite often kept as pets in the home. Hand training can strengthen the bond between both of you, and give your parakeet enough confidence to fly around the room instead of being in the cage at all times. There are certain guidelines that you should follow to successfully hand train your pet bird. By using these basic techniques, hand training your parakeet can be done with little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Gain the trust of your parakeet before hand training it. Slowly put your hand inside the cage each time you are feeding the parakeet. Play soothing music and softly talk to him to keep him calm. Depending on the temperament of your parakeet, it may take anywhere from one to two weeks for you to gain his trust.

    • 2

Teach your parakeet the skills to step on a perch. Make sure that your surrounding is quiet, without any distractions. Take a small perch from inside the cage and slowly move it towards the bird's chest, while gently pressing it against the lower part of his chest. The perch should be slightly above the parakeet's legs.

    • 3

Say the command "Up" in a firm voice, while gently pressing the perch on the parakeet's lower chest. Doing this will slightly push the bird off balance. By instinct he will place his feet on the perch to regain his balance. Praise your bird enthusiastically when he successfully places both feet on the perch. If he flies away, stop and repeat the same steps the next day.

    • 4

Teach your parakeet the finger-perch skills. Place the perch close to the bird's lower chest, but this time you should place your second finger on top of the perch. Slowly move your finger, as well as the perch towards the bird, while saying "Up." Praise your bird for his efforts. Repeat each day until he is comfortable with sitting on your finger.

Prepare to train you parakeet to come out of the cage. Close all the doors and windows in the room and let everyone know not to enter the room during training. Put your hands in the cage and move it slowly toward the parakeet. When the bird steps on your finger, slowly move your hand towards the entrance of the cage door. The next day, move him closer until he is eventually outside of the cage.
