What is a dolphins usual speed?

Dolphins have different swimming speeds, depending on the species. In general, they are capable of swimming up to 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour) over short distances. For sustained swimming, they usually move at speeds between 5 and 10 miles per hour (8 and 16 kilometers per hour). Some dolphins, such as the Pacific white-sided dolphin, are known to be capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour) for short periods of time.
