Australia is home to some of the most unusual animals in the world. There are 21 known species of parakeets in Australia. The Budgerigar parakeet is one of the most popular species of pet birds with more than 100 color varieties. The popular cockatiel is also found in Australia. Others species include the Princess of Wales, red-rumped and the scarlet-chested to name a few.
Asian Parakeets

Asia is full of tropical island nations as well as many tropical areas on the mainland that are home to 15 species of parakeets. Asian parakeets are said to have some of the most unique physical characteristics. The derbyan parakeet with its blue and green plumage is one of the more intelligent pet birds. It learns to talk easily but seems to be extra loud compared to other parakeets. Also in Asia are the ringneck, mustached and Alexandrine parakeets.
New Zealand Parakeets

New Zealand and its neighboring islands only have four species of native parakeets. One of these species, the Mahlerbe's parakeet, is nearing extinction.The other species are known especially for their colors. These include the red-fronted (also known as the yellow-crowned), yellow-fronted or Forbe's yellow-fronted parakeets.
Central and South American Parakeets

Parakeets in the Americas don't have the unusually bright color patterns that the Australian parakeets have. One of the pet favorites from this region is the Quaker or monk who is very affectionate and people-friendly with a sweet disposition. The barred, canary-winged, grey-cheeked, orange-chinned and tui are all found in South and Central America. There are also two species of conure parrots in this region such as the black-hooded and mitred conure.
