How to Bring a Parakeet Outside

Add a little variety to a parakeet's life by taking it outside in its cage. Parakeets enjoy warm weather (65 degree Fahrenheit and higher). When taking the parakeet outside, it's important to keep the wind temperature in mind. Cold winds can make the bird sick. Parakeets will fly away if they go outside freely, though if they have clipped wings, you can usually catch them. With their small cages, parakeets are easy to transport from one location to another.

Instructions

    • 1
The bars on a parakeet cage sit close together.

Check the temperature outside. Check the cage for loose hatches, doors and large gaps. All of the openings should close securely to keep the parakeet from escaping.

    • 2
A deck or porch ledge doesn't protect the cage from falling over.

Clear a spot outside to place the cage. Pick a spot that you can watch closely and is away from high winds. Avoid placing the cage on ledges. The cage can blow over, killing or injuring the parakeet.

    • 3
Though most cages have handles, grip the cage from the bottom.

Lift the parakeet cage with both hands. Carry it slowly outside and place it on a flat surface. Fill the water dish.

Cats and other animals may go after the bird if the cage is left alone.

Watch the parakeet in the cage. Birds and other animals may try to approach the cage. Shoo away any approaching creatures, even other birds. Wild birds can carry diseases.

Carrying the cage from the bottom prevents the lower part from falling off.

Lift the cage from the bottom and carry it back to the room.
