What Is the Origin of the Golden Eagle?

Golden eagles (aquila chrysaetos) are among the largest raptors in North America; they are comparable in size to bald eagles and California condors. Their name comes from the golden-brown sheen of the feathers on their heads and necks.

    • Golden eagles are originally from North America, North Africa, North Asia and Europe. Pairs of these birds claim territories of up to 60 square miles and nest in high places such as cliffs and trees.

    Considerations

    • In the winter, golden eagles may migrate south for the season. However, birds that live in the western half of the United States and Mexico are capable of staying in their nests throughout the colder months.

    • The golden eagle appears on the Mexican coat of arms. It also is currently under the protection of government laws in the United States.
