How to Use Parakeet Nesting Boxes for Sparrows

Observing the nesting practices of various types of birds is a fascinating hobby and a wonderful tool for teaching children about nature. Parakeets are, in North America, domestic birds who stay indoors. Parakeet owners who want their parakeets to breed will build a nesting box in the parakeet's cage to facilitate the parakeets' mating, the female laying her eggs and both birds tending to the clutch as the eggs incubate, hatch and mature. Parakeet nesting boxes are appropriate as nesting boxes for sparrows as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a wooden parakeet nesting box which is 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 1/2 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches deep. This is the standard nesting box size for parakeets. Close the nesting box on all sides, including the top.

    • 2

Cut a 1 1/2-inch diameter opening (circle) in two walls of the parakeet nesting box with a jigsaw. The parakeet nesting box needs one opening but a sparrow nesting box should have two openings.

    • 3

Hang the parakeet nesting box outside in a shady spot.

    • 4

Place the parakeet nesting box near bushes or under house eaves for the sparrow's use. Sparrows naturally nest in hollow tree trunks so their nesting box should mimic that as much as possible. Hang the nesting box in a place where there are leaves and branches, if possible. Hang the parakeet nesting box on a tree by nailing it on or attach it to a wooden board of the house frame.

    • 5

Hang two or three parakeet nesting boxes next to each other. Sparrows like to have a variety of nesting options available to choose from.
