Facts on Canaries

Canaries are very lively, yellow birds that have been kept domestically for many years. Miners used to take them into caves to test for proper oxygenation in the shafts.

    • Canaries live an average of 5 to 9 years.

    Coloration

    • Wild canaries are usually gray or green instead of the yellow color we know in domesticated birds.

    • They are small birds, averaging from 3 to 6 inches and weighing in at approximately 20 grams.

    Reproduction

    • Canaries lay a clutch of three to seven eggs that hatch in approximately two weeks.

    Domestication

    • Germany is considered the original area for training and breeding canaries.

    Origination

    • Canaries are named from the island in which they came, the Canary Islands.
