Kiwi Birds Habitat

The kiwi bird is a small, wingless and nearly flightless bird, approximately the size of an average chicken. It is the national bird of New Zealand, however, many residents have never seen the nocturnal but well-known secretive bird.
  1. Geography

    • The kiwi bird is specific to the island nation of New Zealand. This is due to the kiwi being a flightless bird and therefore unable to migrate to new areas.

    Climate

    • New Zealand features a temperate climate. For most of the year, the kiwi bird and other residents of New Zealand enjoy mild temperatures, high levels of rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

    Habitat

    • Kiwi birds prefer to live in wooded areas, however, some species of kiwi will live in grasslands.

    Lifestyle

    • Kiwis can live up to 40 years in their natural habitat. With no wings, their sensitive beaks and powerful legs have become well-adapted at finding insects and spiders for food.

    Fun Fact

    • The kiwi bird got its name for the distinctive, clear, shrill sound that it makes: "kee-wee kee-wee."
