Umbrella Cockatoo Information

Umbrella cockatoos are extremely intelligent and affectionate parrots that bond readily with humans. Their sweet nature and appealing beauty make them one of the most popular species of pet cockatoos.
  1. Weight

    • Umbrella cockatoos measure approximately 19 inches (48cm) and can range from .88 to 1.3 lbs. in weight.

    Appearance

    • Umbrella cockatoos are white with dark gray beaks and black or reddish-brown eyes. The underside of their wings and tails are light yellow. Umbrella cockatoos' most noticeable feature may be their large, white, rounded crest that is raised when the bird gets excited or surprised.

    Natural Habitat

    • Umbrella cockatoos are native to the Moluccan Islands of Indonesia and nest in tree cavities.

    Temperament

    • Umbrella cockatoos make sweet, affectionate pets but must be properly trained and cared for to avoid problematic behavior (screeching, biting and feather plucking). They need at least one hour of human-bird playtime per day (more is better) and an additional several hours of supervised time out of their cages.

    Lifespan

    • With proper care, Umbrella cockatoos may live 45 to 80 years.
