How to Buy Exotic Sultan Chickens

Sultan chickens are considered a rare breed of chicken and not every hatchery offers consistent access to these birds. Sultan chickens are identified by a red crest, a muff and beard, vulture-like hooks, shank feathers and five toes. These birds are often raised as show birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a hatchery that breeds Sultan chickens. Some breeders of exotic birds, such as McMurray Hatchery, have full service websites. Also check out the hundreds of bird show and club resources on the Birdshows website.

    • 2

Research your chosen hatchery before contacting them about a purchase. If the hatchery has a website, look for testimonials from previous buyers. If any comments provide contact information, contact them and ask about their experience with the breeder you're thinking of purchasing the Sultans through. Any bird clubs local to the breeder's geographic area can also inform you of the breeder's reputation and bird quality.

    • 3

Price the birds. Exotics such as the Sultan chicken are not always listed by themselves on a breeder's site or price sheet. Call the selected breeder and inquire about the price of their birds, shipping costs and any order minimums or limits they have. If you want the birds shipped outside the United States, ask the breeder if they ship internationally to your destination. Often there are extra costs for health papers. Some countries prevent shipments of live animals altogether.

    • 4

Ask how you can order from the breeder and what form of payment the breeder accepts. Many allow you to place orders for the Sultan chickens via the Internet, but it's nice to talk to a real person to ensure the details are handled properly and you know what to expect.

Contact the breeder and place your order.
