Physical Appearance
-
These lively creatures, upon fully maturity, tend to attain lengths of just over 6 inches, and they usually weigh between 1.5 and 1.8 ounces. Out in nature, lineolated parakeets generally possess predominantly green feathers, although they also have deep green and black elements on their wings and backs. Lineolated parakeets in homes as pets, however, exist in many different colors, from white to blue. They have deep brown eyes, deep green tails and pale gray or pale brownish-pink feet.
Living Environment
-
In nature, lineolated parakeets are usually seen in damp cloud forests and mountainous regions -- especially those chock full of bamboo. In captivity, they usually can manage well with birds that are their same physical size or tinier. To thrive, they need various elements in their living spaces, including leather chew toys, ropes, perches, swings and puzzles. Since they are avid climbers, their cages must house appropriate climbing spots. To receive sufficient physical fitness, lineolated parakeets need between three and four hours outside of their cages daily -- always with monitoring.
Temperament
-
For pet avian world standards, lineolated parakeets are rather silent. Within small social units of roughly three birdies of less, they generally remain quiet, emitting soothing chirping sounds as they wish. The more members of their species that are in their company, however, the noisier they usually behave. When they eat, they often give off nasal rattling sounds. Lineolated parakeets usually are affectionate, gentle and relaxed birds. Since they tend to be companionable, they typically look forward to close and frequent interactions with the humans in their lives.
Food
-
In the wild, lineolated parakeets feed heavily on bug larvae, bamboo seeds, buds and fruit. As captive pets, they generally do well on commercial seed blends with elements such as canary seeds. For a healthy groundwork to their diets, however, nutrient-packed pellet formulas can go a long way, too. Ample fresh fruits and vegetables also make a positive addition to the captive lineolated parakeet diet, whether lettuce, chard, apples or bananas. When planning your lineolated parakeet's diet, speak to an avian veterinarian for thoroughness and suggestions. Abstain from ever feeding your bird anything if you're not totally certain of its avian safety.
Health
-
Compared with many other types of birds, lineolated parakeets tend to have shorter life expectancies. With the right attention and caring, they often live for a maximum of 15 years or so. Be sure to take your parakeet for an appointment with an avian veterinarian at least once each year. If you have any concerns of illness, take him in immediately.

What Is a Lineolated Parakeet?
Lineolated parakeets (Bolborhynchus lineola) are sprightly pet birds that come from Mexico, Central America and South America -- think Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia and Panama, for example. These wee parrots have several other common handles, including barred parakeet and Catherine parakeet. As household pets, they are especially prevalent throughout Europe.
