Where do wasps go in the winter?

Most temperate species of social wasps, such as yellow jackets, hornets, and paper wasps, do not survive the winter. During the late summer or fall, the colony will raise a new generation of queens, which will then fly off to find a place to hibernate. The old queen and the workers will eventually die. The mated queens typically hibernate in protected locations such as under logs or rocks, in attics, or in the ground. They emerge in the spring and start new colonies.
