The majority of hummingbird species are found in tropical and subtropical regions, with the highest concentration in South America.
There are also a number of species that live in North America, including
- the ruby-throated hummingbird,
- the black-chinned hummingbird,
- the Anna's hummingbird
- the calliope hummingbird
and
- the rufous hummingbird.
A few species of hummingbirds are also found in Central America such as the
- violet-crowned woodnymph,
- the emerald-crowned woodnymph,
- the sapphire-throated hummingbird,
- the green-throated mountaingem
- the volcano hummingbird.
A total of 340 hummingbird species are in the Americas.
