Why are parrots called parrots?
The name “parrot” comes from the Late Latin word “psittacus”, which was likely derived from the Arabic “basittaqah”. The word “psittacus” was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to refer to a variety of birds, including parrots, macaws, and cockatoos. As European explorers travelled around the world, they applied the name “parrot” to various species of birds they encountered, and the name eventually became widely accepted.
