What are the different types of English mastiffs?

The English Mastiff comes in two recognized varieties—the old English Mastiff and the modern English Mastiff.

Old English Mastiff

The Old English Mastiff is the original type of English Mastiff. It is recognized by the UK Kennel Club but not by the American Kennel Club. Old English Mastiffs were popular companions in the UK until they experienced a sharp decline in the late 19th century. These dogs are known for their extremely dense, loose skin and very large size. They are often considered the largest dogs in the world.

Modern English Mastiff

The modern English Mastiff is the type that is recognized by the American Kennel Club. It was developed in the 19th century by crossbreeding Old English Mastiffs with other breeds like the Bulldog. Modern English Mastiffs are known for their sleek, short coat and slightly smaller size than Old English Mastiffs. They are also known for their friendly and docile nature.
