Here's why the myth exists:
* The X chromosome: Female cats have two X chromosomes (XX), while male cats have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). The genes for coat color are primarily located on the X chromosome.
* Color variations: This means female cats can inherit different color genes from each of their X chromosomes, leading to a wider range of color combinations like tortoiseshell or calico. Male cats, with only one X chromosome, usually only express one color.
* Exceptions: There are exceptions to this rule. Male cats can be tortoiseshell or calico if they have an extra X chromosome (XXY) which is a genetic condition.
So, while it's more common for female cats to be multi-colored, it's not a guarantee! Both male and female cats can have a variety of colors and patterns.
