How to Make a Bed for a Nursing Cat

If you've got a mother cat with a litter of kittens to nurse, take care of the mom so she can take good care of her babies. In addition to nutritious food, fresh water and a clean litter box, the mother cat needs a quiet, warm area in which to care for her kittens. Providing the nursing cat with a bed will give her comfort and security. Ideally, the mother cat's bed should be prepared before she gives birth to her new litter. However, providing it after the kittens have arrived will still be greatly appreciated by the mother and her new family.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an opening in the side of the cardboard box through which the mother cat can exit and enter. The exit should be cut at least 8 inches above the bottom of the box so that the edge will keep tiny kittens from crawling out behind their mother.

    • 2

Fill the bottom of the box with newspaper. The mother cat will shred the newspapers to make a nest for her babies.

    • 3

Do not add blankets to the box until the kittens are at least a month old. Tiny kittens can easily become trapped in the fold of a blanket and suffocate.

Change out the papers in the box every few days to keep the nursing cat's bed as clean and comfortable as possible.
