How to Breed Cats in an Apartment

Breeding a cat in an apartment is much the same as breeding a cat anywhere else. Due to the smaller space and the constraints of pet clauses in leases, though, there are a few more things to consider. If you have a purebred cat you have already bred, you probably have plenty of experience. But if this is your first time breeding a cat, the process is fairly straightforward. Consider the particulars of your cat's breed and research the market for purebred kittens in your area before embarking on a breeding hobby.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain permission from the apartment manager to breed the cats in your apartment. It may help if you have a plan for how long kittens will be living in your apartment before they are adopted.

    • 2

Arrange for the mating. If you have a female cat, obtain a suitable male and bring the female to the male. If you have the male, find a suitable female. Individual breeds have associations you can join that will help you find a suitable mate for your cat.

    • 3

Confirm the pregnancy by taking the female to the veterinarian. Follow the vet's advice and feed the cat healthy food. Ask the vet for advice regardign which vitamins to add to the mother's food.

    • 4

Prepare a nesting area for the female to use when she gives birth. A cardboard box is fine for a base, lined with towels and blankets. You will want access to a power outlet, because when the female gives birth you will want the heating pad to keep the kittens warm.

    • 5

Assist in the birth only if the female seems to be having extreme trouble. Be prepared to call your veterinarian if there are problems. By and large, the cat should be able to handle the birthing alone. Use the aspirator to help clear the breathing passages of the kittens if they are having trouble.

Use the dental cloth to tie off the umbilical cords.
